About the report:

The mallowstreet Equality, Diversity & Inclusion survey, in partnership with Cardano, is an annual report that identifies the steps trustees are taking to improve diversity and inclusion in institutional pensions and helps the industry work together by sharing best practice and solutions to the most pressing challenges schemes face when starting this journey.

The first survey was completed by over a hundred pension professionals, who were questioned on key topics such as what EDI challenges schemes face and the benefits of improving their EDI positioning.

Last year the survey uncovered that while most schemes are in the early days of their journey, professional trustee services firms are doing a good job improving EDI. For example, 54% conducted EDI training while one in three have a board where 40% of trustees are women.

The survey will run until 25th September. The results will be shared across the regulatory and investment sectors, placing equality, diversity and inclusion at the top of the institutional agenda.

Stuart Breyer, CEO of mallowstreet, said the return of the research will help empower discussion around change and progress within our industry.

“The return of our annual EDI survey in partnership with Cardano will help to better understand how EDI considerations feature in trustees’ policy setting and the challenges they face as well as where the industry is improving. The findings will be available for free to ensure the pension industry is helped in forwarding this important issue.”

Darren Redmayne, CEO, Cardano Advisory, said: “Since last year the pensions industry has seen some progress on EDI. The Pensions Regulator published its EDI guidance for trustees and we are pleased to see that they are now also launching a survey looking at the make-up of the community. The more data that the industry is able to generate on this important issue, the more progress can be made in identifying challenges and put in place policies to increase EDI for the benefit of schemes and members.

At Cardano, we believe that improving EDI broadens perspectives, improves governance and can lead to better decision-making for pension savers. We look forward to continuing our partnership with mallowstreet to better understand how EDI considerations can best feature in policy setting and help provide insights around challenges and where the industry is improving.”
